Toowoomba has welcomed a new store unique to the CBD, with Red Sand Sisters recently opening its doors to the public.
The business, which previously frequented markets across South East Queensland with its own brand of creations, is a family-owned and operated cultural gift store that stocks handmade, traditional Aboriginal homewares and accessories.
Step inside and you’ll find everything from tote bags and scrunchies, to authentic artworks and hand-painted didgeridoos. You’ll also find native bush foods such as jams and relishes, as well as plant pots, t-shirts, and jewellery lining the shelves.
While many of the goods on offer are sourced from handmade crafters across the state, the shop also shares the creations of proud Murri Kamillaroi Kooma owners and sisters Natasha and Lisa-May. Natasha, a contemporary artist, hand weaves a collection of fashionable earrings and necklaces, while Lisa-May prints clothing that celebrates their culture.
The store is an exciting addition to the growing Toowoomba handmade scene, that’s provided brick and mortar for many smaller artisans while encouraging shoppers to choose local.
You can find Red Sand Sisters at 221 Margaret Street (near Karan-An and Sweet Talk), with doors open from 9.00am to 4.00pm on Wednesdays to Saturdays.
