What's on for kids these school holidays

Leave it to us: we’ve rounded up what’s on in town to keep the kids entertained these holidays, no matter if they’re into animals or art.

If you’ve been scratching your head thinking of ways to keep the little ones happy, you’ve come to the right place. Say goodbye to choruses of “I’m bored” with these fun, local activities, all happening before school’s back.

Painting Workshops at Tinker Art

Calling all future Picassos! Tinker is hosting a handful of art workshops these school holidays. Let them paint a watercolour portrait or an oil pastel jungle in these social sessions hosted by artist Alex Stalling and the crew. They can also host your child’s birthday party, so their friends can leave with their very own masterpiece.

integratedSTEM’s LIFE ON MARS Challenge

Are your kids obsessed with space, technology & or simply just love making stuff? Well, they’re in luck with integratedSTEM’s Life On Mars kicking off soon. Designed for students in grades 1-8, the challenge takes place over five days and puts the science and technonologies that makes space habitation possible into studentss hands in an interactive way. Register your child for any or all of the jam-packed days, held from 16-20 January.

GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH MARINE ANIMALS AT Cobb+Co

Under the Sea by Ocean Life Education will let your family meet real sea life, and learn all about how they live and how we can care for the ecosystem. Meet marine animals including baby sharks, sea cucumbers, sea stars, sea urchins, and coral. There are live shows daily at 10.00am, 11.30am and 1.00pm, running til Friday, 13 January. Tickets are $12 per child, which includes photo opportunities.

Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery’s MASARAP Workshop

Inspired by the word ‘Masarap’ which means ‘Delicious’ in the Filipino language, this workshop is insipired by artist Ben Tupas recent artwork by the same title. Participants will be encouraged to storytelling through food, exploring the ingredients relating to the famous Filipino dish, Chicken Adobo and creating art inspired by their family recipes, record their story or create a digital photographic work that incorporates the story behind the food. At the end of the workshop, participants will sample Chicken Adobo from a local restaurant. The workshops runs from 11.30am-12.30pm on 13 January can costs $11. Just register online.

Bunnings Kids’ Activities

Running every Saturday and Sunday, Bunnings stores host interactive projects for kids to make toolboxes, planter boxes, mosaics, and much more. These workshops are free for kids aged 5 and over. Check out their website for the full roster of events at both local stores.

Animal Feeding Sessions at Darling Downs Zoo

Located 40 minutes south of Toowoomba near Clifton, Darling Downs Zoo makes for a fun day out for all ages. There’s daily (free!) animal feedings and talks throughout the day, from baby crocodiles to meerkats. Make sure to see the website above for all the animal show times, so you can start planning your day trip. Don’t forget to bring a hat and sunscreen.

Empire Theatre Performances and Programs

The Empire Theatre offers a handful of workshops throughout the year designed for kids with a passion for arts, drama, singing and dance. These holidays, your teenagers can join the 18 Hour Play Project. Across three days, they’ll get to build a unique performance from the ground up and develop their acting, script-writing, and creative skills. There’s also live performances such as the Teeny Tiny Stevies - How to be Creative Tour.

ACTIVITIES at THE City Library

Toowoomba City Library is holding a series of fun and free interactive activities inspired by their favourite video games including Legend of Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, BYO switch to battle and co-op, including a Zelda scavenger hunt, switch battles, jewellry-making sessions and puzzles. These run til 19 January - so book in early.

BUSY BEE & SEED BOMB WORKSHOP

An education and enquiry-based learning of all things pollination and bees. Your kids make and take home a flower bomb that will help the pollinators in their garden. Suitable for ages 4 and an older, the workshop is running 19 January at 9:30.

KIDS & TEEN YOGA

Start the 2023 school year feeling ready. Feel comfy and calm in and outside the classroom. Notice your feelings and learn tips and tricks to breathe, move and find gratitude especially when creating new routines and trying new things. Kids’ Yoga is suitable for children starting year 1 to 6 and Teen Yoga is suitable for grades 7 to 12. BYO yoga mat or towel and consider sun safety. Sessions run January 18,20 & 22.

School Holiday Kids Bingo

Enjoy a session of Bingo with your kids, or bring your grandkids on Friday 13 January at Toowoomba Sports Club. It’s free to attend with fun prizes to be won.

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN at Grand Central

From January 16, your Kids will love becoming a little masterchef as they are guided through making their own mini pizza to take home. Join in the fun on Level 1 in Centre Court near Smiggle, daily from 11am - 2pm for a FREE kids workshop.
