ABOUT / Opening onto the mural covered alleyway of the Walton Stores precinct, Bergen - meaning "mountain" in Norwegian - and named after owner and chef Clayton Costigan's childhood family farm, pays homage to his passion for food and love for paddock-to-plate dining. The restuarant, opened in late 2022, taking over a space previously occupied by Junk and Amalfi, with a focus on high-quality, classy but relaxed Australian cuisine in a casual dining environment.

DESIGN / The space still uses elements of the original Walton’s department store, featuring exposed timber beams and polished concrete in a way that balance and compliment the clean neutral elements. The result is a contemporary modern aesthetic and calming retreat from the surrounding inner-city busyness.

FOOD / Expect creative, produce-driven food effortlessly blending classic favourites with modern flavours, like pork belly with pumpkin, kasundi & soy, and a (seriously) banging chicken with paprika, lime, hazelnuts, goats cheese and grains. Regardless of what you order, expect each bite to be laden with fresh produce and curated with care.

WINE / Wine at Bergen also plays a starring role (it’s only natural given that Clayton’s wife Katrina owns Uva Wine Bar just around the corner). The extensive wine list represents Australia as well as a smattering of other favourites, with most options available by both the glass and the bottle. For the non-wine lovers, they also offer a variety of beers, ciders, cocktails and showcase locally produced gins such as Hopscotch Distillers and wine from Rosalie House.

HIGHLIGHT / Must-try dish? we really can't get over that chicken, but also their silky macadamia and coconut semifreddo with fig and anglaise.

Bergen is open on for lunch (11:30pm-3:00pm) and dinner (5:30pm-10pm) Tuesday - Saturday. @bergentoowoomba
