Exhibition | Brushes of Sunlight: Oils from the Lindsay Collection
The Lindsay Collection was established by William and Marion Bolton in Toowoomba in the 1950s. It was officially opened by Prime Minister Robert Menzies in 1959 and has been housed at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery since 1994.
Guided by the collection’s namesake Sir Lionel Lindsay and his brother Sir Daryl Lindsay, the Boltons acquired works by ‘Masters of Australian painting’ (Bill Bolton letter to Sir Lionel, 1 July 1957). The Lindsays were eminent artists and Sir Daryl was Director of the National Gallery of Victoria 1941-1956.

Art and craft, in particular fibre crafts, have a positive impact on health and wellbeing, from the meditative act of spinning fibres into yarn through to the enjoyment of wearing or gifting a handmade item. Miriam encourages the viewer to contemplate where they find meaning and satisfaction and to appreciate the little things in life.

Little Darlings
Marilyn Murray presents Little Darlings, which references the size of the paintings and subject matter, the Darling Downs. The miniature artworks, measuring just 8.9 x 6.4cm, will jog memories and evoke emotional ties to the Region.
Part of Marilyn’s “Meeting History in Miniature” series, these intricate works of art showcase the beauty of the Darling Downs region and feature old churches, community halls and pubs.

The exhibition is based on the historical artistic trope of ‘memento mori’ (remember that you will die) – that life is fleeting – and so we should ‘carpe diem’ (seize the day)! Reinterpreting a long-standing historical artistic practice dating from Roman times through to contemporary ‘still life’, provides opportunities for commentary on social mores. Death is almost a friendly spectre on the periphery, but it is the ultimate social leveller.

Observational Correspondence showcases the work of regional artists Lisa Clarke and Ben Tupas over their five-year collaboration. This exhibition highlights a selection of 50 postcards sent between the two during the span of their project that offer a unique snapshot of contemporary Australia.
In a digital world where analogue communication and the postal service are slowly fading into obsolescence, their work uses the miniature canvas of the postcard to give glimpses of humour, pathos, and fleeting beauty inspired by the human condition.
Observational Correspondence is a meditation on connection, friendship, and a strong case for slowing down to be more present in life.
