At home with. . . Georgie & Michael

In what was transparently just an excuse for us to visit their home, we sat down with Georgie, a fitness professional, and Michael, a site supervisor for Valdal Projects, to find out more about their gorgeous East Toowoomba worker's cottage.

Q. What were you looking for in your home?

We really wanted a home that felt warm, inviting and charming. A place that feels like a home, not a house. We found that in our little workers’ cottage.

We are so relaxed here it feels like a holiday. Being at home helps us slow down, relax and recharge. It’s the perfect place when it’s just the two of us together, but it also comes alive when friends and family drop by.

Q. What’s the best investment you’ve made in your home?

Plants. They can really make a room come alive. They add structure, warmth and life to every space (oh, and did I mention – more green!).

Q. What is your favourite room?

We love the dining room – it’s where everyone comes to meet. It’s intimate and cozy, yet comfortable and welcoming. Truly a place to enjoy special moments together and with family and friends.

Q. What are some of your favourite pieces?

Our paintings – it’s a collection we’ve created over time. Mementos from trips and travels. From galleries to op shops, we are always on the hunt. It’s a collection that will continue to grow over our lifetime.

We also love our green velvet sofa. It took a year to find the perfect one and we finally did on Facebook marketplace! Our Peta Berghofer mugs take pride of place in the kitchen, and we always love to pick up special pieces from Harold’s Finishing Touches.

Q. What are your renovation plans?

Whilst we love her how she is, we’d love to do a striking modern extension with a nod to traditional workers’ cottage features. A small pool and studio would also be on the wish list.

Q. What do you love about your neighbourhood?

East Toowoomba has it all. Wonderful cafes to entertain in. Queens Park to play in. Saturday markets to get lost in. And of course, a wonderful community to feel at home in.
